Back in the 1950s, there were Italian Hot Dog Joints all over Newark’s North Ward. Now there is only one….Dickie Dee’s. Two couples, who were married on the same day, June 11, 1950, decided to open up a business together after their company went on strike.
The boys and girls, who got married on the same day, June 11, 1950, and honeymooned together in Naples -- "Maine, not Italy," said Toni D'Innocenzio -- figured an Italian hot dog joint would be easy enough.
They found a small store on Bloomfield Avenue and opened up "Dickie Dee's." The girls cooked and worked during the day, the boys, who were back to work at ITT, came in at night. Eight years later business was so good, the boys quit ITT and bought the building at 380 Bloomfield Ave., at the corner of North 6th Street, and "Dickie Dee's" has been there ever since.
The couples don't work there anymore, and the place is run by Rick D'Innocenzio, Dickie Dee's son, but they are still best friends. Get them together and the stories flow. Every sentence starts with, "Remember the time..."
The Italian Hot Dog -- one or two deep fried franks, grilled onions and peppers (red and green), and thick-cut potatoes packed onto pizza bread -- is a Newark invention.
On the walls you can see pictures of Frankie Valli (of the Four Seasons), Joe Pesci, Blues Brothers, Yogi Berra, Joe Torre, and Frank Vincent among others, all of whom ate at Dickie Dee’s, a North Ward legend
